The ESM principles – What the European Sport Model claims to stand for
The RESM research identifies exactly six principles at the heart of the European Sport Model: Autonomy / Open Competition / Pyramid / Solidarity / Values / Voluntarism
These six fall into two groups:
- Broad concepts (Autonomy, Values, Voluntarism): They describe what the model aspires to, but they lack clear definitions or mechanisms for putting them into practice.
- Structural features (Pyramid, Open Competition, Solidarity): They describe how sport is supposed to be organised. The pyramid is the central structure; open competition is how athletes move through it; solidarity is how money flows within it.
Let us look at each one.
